Unfortunately, many employers barely have the time needed to wade through resumes, interview applicants and make a job offer. With this reality, updates and personal communications between applicants and employers are pretty much out of the question. However, in today's job market, well qualified applicants are sophisticated. They do more research about who the employer is; they listen to what current employees are saying about their employer; and they expect and often prefer to use the web as the way to submit an application. As a result, today's employers need to be more competitive. They need to present and maintain a professional image to attract, find and retain well qualified candidates. They need to cultivate employer brands that highlight the value of the people that work for them and attract the best employees. In 2010, one of our clients challenged us with helping them fill some key positions. Because they were a startup, we were faced with having to find a solution that would help build a positive employer brand and where we (our client and our recruiting staff) could communicate through different time zones. The solution had to fit within our client's very modest budget, had to be intuitive for users with varying levels of computer skill, and had to be easily customizable. We considered many solutions, but we were not able to find one that worked for our clients and that accommodated their processes.
